Top 5 Foods That Will Promote Healthy Teeth

Regular brushing may do your teeth a lot of good, but that may not be enough to get rid of plaque-causing bacteria. Plaque is the source of the acid that damages the enamel of the teeth. This acid is also responsible for cavities and gum diseases. However, recent research in the dental health field points out certain foods that can help promote dental health. Here is a list of them.
Tea
Black and green teas contain compounds such as polyphenols. Polyphenols reduce the growth rate of bacteria that causes gum diseases and cavities. Studies show that those who rinse their mouths with black tea one minute 10 times a day are more likely to have less plaque on their teeth. Black tea also fights bad breath by suppressing the bacteria that causes the smell.

Cheese
Studies show that there are a number of 12- to 15-year-olds who registered lower acid levels in their mouths because of eating cheddar cheese. This was the data compared to those who had sugar-free yogurt. Cheese may have a significant role in neutralizing plaque acid. Chewing will also increase the production of saliva, and this may wash out large amounts of bacteria in the mouth.

Raisins
Naturally sweet raisins don't have sucrose in them. It’s sucrose, or table sugar, that keeps bacteria stuck on the surface of the teeth. Sooner or later, this then produces plaque. Raisins are also a rich source of phytochemicals that can also destroy plaque-forming bacteria. Moreover, there are compounds in raisins that affect bacterial growth.

Crunchy Foods
Crunchy foods help because of the chewing part. Chewing food to break it down is common when you’re consuming apples, carrots, or cucumbers. However, chewing cleanses the mouth of dental plaque. Thus, the chewing will produce enough saliva that can get rid of the bacteria on the teeth.

Milk
A glass of milk can lower levels of acid in the mouth after eating. Milk proves to be more potent than apple juice or mere drinking water. Milk neutralizes the acid from bacteria that cause plaque. However, when you add milk to cereal, milk becomes sweet and syrupy and thus bad for the teeth.

Some Final Words
There could be other foods being studied now that could help promote dental health later on. However, one thing that could give peace of mind to many is to get dental insurance. This dental insurance will cover the cost of expenses for damaged teeth.
