The eye is one of the most delicate parts of your body. As you age, your eyes gets weaker and weaker. It becomes prone to many eye diseases that are related to age. These include cataracts, macular degeneration, and glaucoma. What you need for the cure would be medical check-ups in order to detect these diseases early. However, the best way to counter these diseases and other uncomfortable changes in your eye’s composition is by eating healthy food and making wise food options.
Consume Whole Grains and Cereals
Your bread and cereal may contain high levels of sugars and refined white flours which could even put you at more risk for age-related eye problems. The solution is to consume bread and cereals that are totally whole-grain and rich in fiber. Fiber is the one responsible for keeping you feeling full. This also means avoiding foods which are generally sweet such as pastries, cakes, and many others. Find a way to get the energy from healthy whole grain sources instead of the usual high-sugar sources.

Choose Good Protein Sources
Make sure that you limit saturated fats contained in red meats and certain milk and dairy products as these can put you in greater risk for macular degeneration. Make nuts, fish, lean meats, eggs, and legumes your protein sources. You can also derive zinc from meats and seafood, as well as lutein from eggs. Zinc and lutein are preventive of many eye diseases in old age.

Avoid Sodium but Load Up on Healthy Fats
Sodium increases the formation of cataracts. This means that you should use less salt while you carefully check the sodium content of packaged and canned foods on their labels. Always stay below the daily safe limit of 2,000 mg of sodium. Moreover, it is better to consume fresh and frozen foods instead of canned goods as canning and packaging usually need high amounts of sodium as a preservative.

While you are reducing sodium, you should increase the healthy fats mainly in the form of omega-3 fatty acids that you can find in fish. You can also consume walnuts for your snacks and canola oil for your cooking. You can get your omega-3 from eating fish or seafood at least two times a week.

Consume Large Amounts of Water and Healthy Beverages
Proper hydration to keep your eyes healthy will need water as well as 100 percent natural vegetable juices. You can also consume fruit juices, skim milk, or non-caffeinated teas. In fact, if you regularly hydrate, you can prevent or reduce eye irritation especially the one coming from dry eyes.

Some Final Words
In order to have a healthy vision until old age, you should take care to include the essential vitamins in your diet especially vitamins C, E, A, and B complex, and especially food sources that contain folate. Taking vision supplements is usually safe, but it is always advisable to check with your eye specialist first especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding a child. In any case, you will also be needing vision insurance.
