You cannot live without a healthy set of teeth. Just one toothache can make you very miserable. In fact, it is not enough that you are going to the dentist regularly. You need dental insurance to give you peace of mind in case you will need an urgent case of oral or dental operation or procedure. According to the National Association of Dental Plans, 77% of all Americans have dental benefits, usually from their employer. However, here are some things that you need to know before you get dental insurance.
General Information About Your Dental Insurance
Make sure that you know dental insurance very well. It is different from Medicare and Medicaid programs. Medicare does not cover any form of dental issues, and Medicaid programs cover children’s dental care only. When you are still shopping for insurance, make sure that there are numerous benefits to it. While insurance is all about the amount that the insurer will shoulder if you will need a tooth extracted, benefits are the specific conditions that your policy can instantly cover, whether partially or completely. Check out the benefit because, no matter how big your insurance face value is, if it only covers serious oral and dental operations, then you might think twice about how useful it is.

Types of Plans
Dental plans may have similarities with health insurance plans, but they could have differences too. In any case, one of the general types of dental plans would include a preferred provider organization plan (PPO). This one comes with a list of specific dentists that you can consult if you want to get covered. There is also a dental health maintenance organization plan (DHMO). This is similar to health insurance HMO because it provides you with a specific network of dentists that accepts this plan. Thirdly, there is a discount or referral dental plan. This plan is all about getting a discount on a specific group of dentists.

Specific Details of Insurance Coverage
You should know exactly what your insurance covers and not only how much its face value is. Generally, dental insurance will cover portions of what you spend on fillings, preventive care, crowns, oral surgery, and root canals. Tooth extractions are examples of oral surgery. Some policies may also cover periodontics, orthodontics, or prosthodontics. Bridges and dentures are examples of prosthodontics. Get familiar with how many visits are covered per year and which are partially or completely covered. Make sure too that you know how much your annual cap is.

Timing
Make sure that you’re familiar with the timing of your dental benefits. You may be able to enjoy dental benefits only every six months or only twice a year. That should help you schedule when you are going to the dentist. You should also check time limits like X-rays that the policy can cover only once every two or three years. Also, you should know that existing conditions at the time of enrollment are not covered.

Some Final Words

The importance of knowing the details of your dental insurance cannot be emphasized too heavily. No matter how high your insurance value is, the policy is useless if it does not serve your needs. Also, make sure that you have your own dental insurance. If you rely on your company HMO for your dental insurance needs, then that is a problem once you’re not in the company anymore.
